Description
Numbers 1 and 2, known as Beach House, are a pair of terraced houses located on The Strand in Ilfracombe. They are likely early 18th century structures that have undergone later alterations. The houses are rendered to mimic ashlar stone and feature slate roofs with coved eaves cornices and dormers. They rise three storeys and each has one window on the front facade.
For Number 1, there is a 20th-century door with a narrow overlight. The ground floor has a 4-pane horned sash window, while the first floor features three 20th-century windows. The second floor has three 2-pane windows. All windows are fitted with external quasi shutters.
Number 2 also has a 20th-century door with a narrow overlight. The ground floor includes a 4-pane horned sash window with an exposed frame, and the first floor has similar paired sashes. The second floor features a 3-light horizontally sliding sash window.
These houses are a prominent and important feature of the harbour and, along with the Royal Britannia Hotel and Numbers 8-12 Broad Street, form a significant group.
