Description

3 and 4 Broad Street is a pair of shops with accommodation above, dating from the mid-19th century. The buildings are finished in stucco with quoins at the upper floor corners and feature timber shopfronts.

The exterior consists of two storeys, with No. 4 also having an attic storey. No. 3 has two windows, while No. 4 also has two windows. Channelled stucco pilasters with acanthus capitals support scrolled fascia brackets with palmette stops that flank the shopfronts. No. 3 has a panelled house door with an overlight, plate glass shop windows, and a central recessed entrance with glazed double doors and an overlight. A fascia board with a moulded cornice extends above the house door. No. 4 features a plate glass shop window and a part-glazed entrance door to the right, along with a similar fascia board and cornice.

The first floors of both shops have eared architrave 2-pane sash windows with moulded sills on shaped brackets. No. 3 retains original cast-iron window guards, a dentil cornice, and a blocking course behind which is a 20th-century dormer. No. 4 continues the cornice and has a pedimented attic storey above, featuring a central sash window flanked by two smaller half-sashes.

Inside, No. 4 is believed to retain a good late 19th-century shop interior with carved wood panels, mirrors, and a stained glass window. No. 3 had a similar interior until around 1973 but is now plain. The Royal Britannia, Nos 3 and 4, along with Nos 8-12, form a group with Nos 1 and 2 The Strand.
