Description
The Royal Britannia Hotel is a hotel and public house located in Ilfracombe, likely built in the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of stucco, which is channelled at the ground floor to resemble ashlar stone, with quoining on the left side only. It has a rectangular corner block design, with elevations facing Broad Street, The Quay, and the harbour.
The hotel stands three storeys high and has cellars. The main elevation on Broad Street features six windows, with three in a slightly projecting later addition on the right. The central entrance is located in the older block and is framed by a porch supported on later brackets, with part-glazed doors. The ground floor has 2-pane sash windows, while the upper floors are fitted with 12-pane unhorned sashes. A parapet runs along the top of the building. Above the porch, there are reliefs of the Royal Arms on either side of a decorative iron lamp bracket.
The elevation facing The Quay includes four 12-pane hornless sashes and an altered door that was originally Tuscan, featuring a frieze and cornice, although now only the pilasters and the panelled soffit of the canopy remain. The harbour elevation has three three-storey bows with 3-light unhorned sashes and blind windows between the bows on the upper storeys. To the left, there is a Tuscan doorcase with 20th-century double doors.
The interior has been altered at ground floor level but retains some original features; the upper floors have not been inspected. This building is a prominent and important feature of the harbour and, along with Nos. 3 & 4 and 8-12 (consecutive), forms a group with Nos. 1 & 2 The Strand.
