Description
Castle House is a detached house located on a hill, with its main facade overlooking the harbour. It was built in the early 19th century and features a stucco exterior with slate-hanging on the southern road facade, the north facade of the western extension, and its west elevation. The house has slated roofs that are hipped at the east end.
The main facade has two storeys, while the road facade has one storey due to the rise in the ground. It consists of three canted bays, with the center bay being larger and flanked by single bays. Most of the openings are pointed, and some windows have traceried panes. The extension features casement windows on the ground floor and 2-pane sash windows on the first floor. The eastern facade includes a 3-light bay with 2-pane sashes and a 3-light canted bay with 18-pane sashes at the first floor level. The single-storey road facade has irregular fenestration, with three sashes, two casements, and one pointed Gothick window with leaded panes.
Although the interior has not been inspected, Castle House is a notable feature on the hillside as viewed from the harbour and may be situated on the site of a fort known as Ilfracombe Castle, which was used during the Civil War.
