Description

Boyne House is a villa that has been converted into a college boarding house. It was built around 1830 to 1840 and has undergone later additions and alterations. The building features stucco over brick with a hipped slate roof and gault brick ridge and end stacks. It has a double depth plan with a central hallway.

The exterior is two storeys and an attic, with five first-floor windows and a single-storey service wing on the right side. The stucco detailing includes a plinth, quoins, a moulded first-floor sill band, tooled architraves with cornices on consoles for the first-floor windows, and console brackets supporting the wide eaves. The ground floor has tall 1/1 sash windows, while the first floor features a central tripartite window with a 6/6 sash between two 2/2 sashes, with the rest being 6/6 sashes. The attic has 20th-century multi-pane windows. The central entrance consists of a five fielded-panel door flanked by side-lights and topped with an overlight. The left return has a range of two plus ten first-floor windows, with similar stucco detailing as the main facade. The ground floor has 6/6 sashes, and the first floor has pairs of 2/2 sashes with round-arched heads. The rear of the building includes a round-arched staircase window.

Inside, the villa retains an openwork staircase featuring alternate stick and embellished iron balusters with a lion's paw foot. The hall has a Coalbrookdale tile floor, and the cornices are cavetto-moulded and egg-and-dart, with a moulded cornice adorned with lilies. There are fireplaces made of marble and slate, although the rest of the interior was not inspected. Historically, it is reputed to have been a private house before being acquired for use as boarding houses around 1840 to 1850.
