Description
No. 8 St Mary's Road is a villa, now divided into flats, built around 1838 to 1850 with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of brick with a painted stucco front and garden facades, topped with a Welsh slate roof and featuring a cast-iron balcony. It displays a Neo-classical style, with its gable end facing the street.
The exterior consists of two storeys with an attic and a basement, featuring three first-floor windows. On the first floor, there is a sill band, with the central window being a 6/6 sash framed by a moulded architrave and entablature, flanked by two blind openings, also with moulded architraves. The attic has two 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals, with sills and moulded architraves.
The ground floor is accessed by seven roll-edged steps leading to a central entrance, which features a three-panel door with a decorative lower panel, set between pilaster strips and sidelights, all within a distyle Roman Doric porch that has plain engaged pilasters and a frieze decorated with triglyphs and metopes. The ground floor also includes two blind openings with moulded architraves and an entablature, while a low parapet incorporates chimney stacks.
The garden facade mirrors the front, with two storeys and three first-floor windows, a first-floor sill band, and 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals. It features a frieze and cornice, with tall 6/9 sash windows on the ground floor and three 8/8 sash windows in the basement. The ground floor also boasts a continuous balcony with a balustrade featuring a heart-and-anthemion motif.
The interior has not been inspected.
