Description
No. 83 and 83A on Willes Road is a house, now divided into a house and a flat, built around 1840 to 1850 with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade, topped with a Welsh slate roof and featuring a cast-iron porch. It is designed in a Neo-classical style and has two storeys with four bays, the bay on the right being deeply recessed.
On the ground floor, there is a plinth with horizontal rustication. The entrance is located in the right recess, accessed by three roll-edged steps leading to a four-panel door with an overlight that includes margin-lights, all set within a tooled surround. The porch has an anthemion motif on the struts and a tent roof. The main range on the ground floor features three tall fixed-light windows with double-chamfered plain reveals and roll-edged sills.
Above, on the first floor, a band supports four pairs of Ionic pilasters at the ends of the main range and between the bays, with three one-over-one sash windows that have horns and sills. The recessed bay on the first floor contains a blind, round-arched opening with a sill and tooled surround. The building is finished with a continuous frieze, a dentil cornice, and a low parapet, along with tall end stacks that have cornices. The interior has not been inspected.
