Description

Numbers 70 and 72 are a pair of semi-detached houses built around 1838, with some later alterations. They are constructed of pinkish-brown brick and feature a painted stucco front facade, a Welsh slate roof, and cast-iron railings. The houses stand two storeys tall, with a basement on the right side, and have four first-floor windows. The design includes end pilaster strips that extend to full height.

On the first floor, there are six-over-six sash windows set in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor features a pair of central entrances, which are accessed by five steps leading to three-panel, part-glazed doors topped with overlights that have decorative glazing, all within plain reveals. The entrances are framed by a combined architrave made of pilaster strips, a frieze, and a cornice. To either side of the entrances are canted bays that contain six-over-six sash windows flanked by two-over-two sash windows, with fielded pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. The basement on the right has narrow lights, while the left side has a narrow frieze and a low parapet. The end stacks are taller on the left and feature cornices, with a raised ridge between the two houses.

The railings on the left side of the steps have spear-head finials. Leam Terrace, where these houses are located, was laid out between 1828 and 1836 and was nearly fully built by 1841. Numbers 70 and 72 form part of an architectural group with numbers 68 and 74 Leam Terrace and number 1 Lower Leam Street.
