Description
No. 6 Third Avenue is a villa that was used as a language school at the time of the survey. It was built in the early 1880s, with the dormers being rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed from yellow bricks with moulded brick details and some sandstone dressings, topped with a hipped slate roof. It is double fronted, with an entrance range adjoining to the left (south).
The villa has three storeys over a basement plus an attic, featuring a layout of 1:3:1:3 bays. There are two full-height canted bays that are connected by a two-storey cast-iron balcony. The entrance is set back to the first left, and the windows are sash style without glazing bars, except for three flat-roofed dormers. The centre features French casement windows leading to a three-bay round-arched cast-iron balcony with enriched spandrels.
On the left return (south side), there is a two-tier stone aedicule framing two windows, which was noted to be much eroded at the time of the survey. The entrance is set back in a flat-roofed enclosed porch with a balustrade, approached along the south side by a tessellated pavement and a flight of six marble steps. The entrance has a round-arch opening with enriched spandrels and paired console brackets adorned with garlands above foliate capitals carried on rusticated shafts, similar to the porch of No. 2.
The interior was partially inspected and includes a turned baluster stair and semi-rococo style panelling in the front room on the left, featuring scroll heads on the panels.
