Description

This house, now divided into flats, was built around 1890 by J.T.Chapell. It is constructed with a brick base and rendered upper levels, with terracotta detailing visible on the returns. The building has a steeply pitched tile roof, deep eaves, and tall stacks rising from the eaves on the returns.

The design is double-fronted, extending to a long rear range facing Grand Avenue. The house stands four storeys high, with an attic above a basement. The facade is arranged with two bays to the left, one bay in the centre, and three bays to the right. A prominent full-height canted bay is located to the right of the entrance, rising through the eaves to a canted dormer surmounted by a turret; a smaller dormer is positioned behind an iron balustrade to the left. The third floor features pilasters rising from a string course. The windows are sash windows, with segmental-headed openings on the second floor. A connecting entablature runs across the facade, and a zinc canopy with a pierced pelmet shelters the first-floor French casements. A wrought-iron balustrade, supported by shaped brackets, fronts a balcony. The ground floor windows are square-headed sashes with original blind boxes. The entrance is in the third bay on the left, featuring a fanlight, panelled double doors with an ornamental grill, and a flight of steps with a cast-iron railing.

The five-bay right return shows distinctive detailing including an oriel balcony with a recessed arched-head opening and an ornamental gable with finials.
