Description
This is a house, built around 1890 and later rendered, located on King's Gardens in Hove. It was constructed by J.T.Chapell and is now divided into flats. The building is of brick construction with terracotta detailing and has a steeply pitched tile roof with deep overhanging eaves and tall chimney stacks. The plan is double-fronted, with four stories plus an attic above a basement. The facade is arranged with three bays on the left, one in the centre, and two on the right. A full-height canted bay extends along the right side, rising through the eaves and topped with a segmental-headed tripartite window within a shaped gable. A segmental-headed dormer window is present. Sash windows on the third floor are set between pilasters that rise from a string course. The second-floor windows are segmental-headed sashes with a linked entablature. A zinc canopy with a pierced pelmet covers the first-floor French casement windows. A wrought-iron balustrade on a balcony is supported by shaped brackets. The ground floor features square-headed sash windows. A terracotta doorcase in the Ionic style is similar to that of the adjacent property at No.2 King's Gardens. Double doors with diamond-pane glazing provide access.
