Description
The Statue of Queen Victoria, located on the south side of Grand Avenue in Hove, was created between 1897 and 1901 by sculptor Thomas Brock. The statue is likely made of bronze and grey marble. It features a life-size standing figure of Queen Victoria in royal regalia, facing south. The marble plinth is adorned with a dado that includes four low relief bronze panels depicting allegorical figures representing Commerce, Education, Science, Art, and Empire, each captioned above in incised lettering. An inscription on the south front states, "Erected by the Inhabitants of Hove to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Victoria June 20 AD 1897." There is a low surround with four small marble bollards, although the southeast bollard is missing. The statue was commissioned to commemorate the Queen's Jubilee in 1897 but was completed in the year of her death.
