Description
Exton House, now flats, was built in 1876-7. It is constructed of yellow stock bricks, with extensive use of moulded bricks for cornices, strings, and other decorative details. The roof is shallow-pitched and covered with slate tiles, with tall brick stacks featuring moulded caps at the centre and returns. The building is double-fronted and has three storeys plus an attic over a basement, arranged with a 3:1:3 bay configuration. A shallow bow window is on the left, and a canted bay window is on the right. The attic has segmental-headed dormers containing sash windows with a single vertical glazing bar, while all other windows lack glazing bars. A dentil moulded cornice with a decorative frieze runs around the building, with the first-floor centre window framed by an open pediment supported by Ionic pilasters. The ground floor windows have cills carried on shaped brackets. The entrance features composite columns supporting shaped brackets and a decorative frieze on the entablature, with an original panelled door, a fanlight, and a lamp. A flight of steps leads to the entrance, with cast-iron railings alongside. Brick walls with square piers and moulded caps front the property. A similar arrangement of one bow and one canted bay is also found at No.6 Grand Avenue.
