Description

This is a house, built around 1880 and designed by E.J. Ockenden. It has been converted into flats. The house is constructed of yellow stock bricks with extensive moulded brick detailing, and has a hipped slate roof with tall stacks featuring moulded caps. It is double-fronted, with three bays, and has a full-height canted bay on the left side and a full-height bow on the right. The window openings are surrounded by moulded brick, and most windows are sash windows without glazing bars, except for three gabled dormers with ornamental surrounds and a single vertical glazing bar each. A modillion moulded cornice and chequerboard frieze run along the top, while the second-floor windows have segmental heads. Cills are supported by shaped brackets, and there is a moulded string course. The first-floor windows have square-headed surrounds, except for the central window, which has a segmental head over an entablature resting on brackets. A French casement window opens onto a cast-iron balcony above the porch. The ground-floor windows have segmental heads with keystones, with cills also carried on shaped brackets. A central porch has an arched opening with an ornamental keystone, decorative spandrels, and heavy volute capitals draped with garlands on piers featuring recessed panels of decoration. The original half-glazed, panelled door is approached by a flight of steps. Original cast-iron railings extend from the entrance along the street frontage, set within a low dwarf wall. The rendered piers have moulded coping and domed caps.
