Description

41 First Avenue is a mews building, now used as garages with dwellings above, constructed in 1879 and altered in the 20th century. It features yellow stock bricks with moulded bricks for quoins and other detailing, shallow pitch hipped slate roofs, and overhanging eaves supported by shaped brackets at both ends. The building has tall panelled brick stacks with moulded caps on the west front, alongside a variety of other stacks.

The north range of the mews has its west end facing Second Avenue and its east end facing First Avenue, with the First Avenue elevation being more complete. It is one-and-a-half storeys high, with a segmental-headed attic window cutting through the eaves flanked by two casement windows. One bay of the three-bay segmental-headed blind arcade remains, while the two bays to the left are obscured by the fascia of Ladbroke's, which has an inserted betting shop. There is a pair of rusticated gatepiers with ball finials to the left. The east end has a similar attic window but is otherwise unlit, with the heads of the arcade visible above the fascia for Hugh's of Hove, where the ground floor has been gutted for car showrooms. Another pair of rusticated gatepiers is located to the right. The elevation to the mews displays mixed fenestration and a variety of garage doors.

No.1 is known as No.41 First Avenue on the west side. The mews is depicted on the 1875 Ordnance Survey map and forms part of a notable group with Nos. 7-12 Queen's Place.
