Description

A terrace of dwellings, now flats and offices, was built in 1883-4, with alterations to the attic storey in the mid-to-late 20th century. Designed by H.J. Lanchester and built by Jabez Reynolds Senior, it is constructed of stucco over brick with slate roofs. The end bay on the left, number 33, is listed separately. The entrance to number 21 is on the right return in Palmeira Avenue. The terrace is four storeys high, with an attic, and sits over a basement. It has a three-window frontage to each unit, with a canted bay on the right end. Each three-window unit projects slightly and is linked by string courses. Sash windows, largely without glazing bars, are present, with 20th-century fenestration in the attic storey, except for the gable front. There are inserted dormers in the attic. A central two-tier gable front is surmounted by a segmental pediment containing a heraldic achievement in its tympanum, above a round-headed opening. Below this are three round-headed windows flanked by aedicules resting on a heavy moulded eaves cornice carried on paired shaped brackets with an ornamental frieze. The third floor has camber-headed windows in square-headed openings, while the second floor has square-headed windows each with an entablature carried on console brackets, a scroll pediment in the centre, and cills resting on shaped brackets. The first floor incorporates round-headed windows linked by a continuous entablature with keystones; a pediment tops the central window, and a continuous cast-iron balustrade is supported by rendered console brackets. The ground floor is rusticated, and features Doric porches with rusticated columns, half-glazed doors with ornamental metal grills, and fanlights.
