Description

A warehouse with stabling, later used as storage units, was built in 1893 for The Co-operative Supply Association. Designed by Lainson, the building is constructed of red brick with terracotta dressings, featuring steeply pitched mansard slate roofs and wrought-iron parapets. It has a courtyard plan, with a main U-shaped block and low pavilions enclosing the internal courtyard. The building comprises three storeys plus an attic, with an additional attic storey to the centre block. It is arranged with a 1:3:1:3:1 bay arrangement. Ornamental terracotta gables front the mansard roofs, and the attic has porthole windows in ornamental wooden frames flanking the entrance block. Below, there are terracotta mullioned and transomed windows. The ground floor has semicircular-headed windows in the outer blocks, paired rectangular lights flanking the entrance, and a segmental-headed opening with panelled double doors, featuring a pierced top and a postern gate. A decorative panel above the entrance displays the date and the initials CA SPH, representing the Co-operative Supply Association. Further terracotta ornament is present throughout the building.
