Description

This is a late 1855-1856 town hall, originally constructed for the Brunswick Commissioners and now operating as a snooker club. The ground floor has been altered in the late 19th century. The building was constructed on a rubble and brick base with quoins, and has a concealed roof behind a parapet. It is flanked by buildings to the north and south and sits directly on the street front. The structure is three storeys high with two bays. The second floor features eight-pane sash windows in moulded surrounds. The first floor has pilaster architraves supporting segmental and angular pediments, with a flat string course. The ground floor is rusticated and contains six openings. Many-paned cast-iron fixed light windows are present in the first, third, fourth, and fifth bays on the left side, while square-headed entrances are located in the second and sixth bays. The entrance in the sixth bay has a six-panel door, and the entrance in the second bay leads to a lobby with 20th-century panelled doors and a cast-iron bracket lamp. The building initially served as Brunswick Town Hall before being transferred to the Hove Commissioners and becoming Hove Town Hall until 1882 when a new town hall (designed by Alfred Waterhouse) was built. The Waterhouse building was later demolished after a fire.
