Description

These are a pair of semi-detached villas, built between 1830 and 1832, and partly altered in the late 19th century and mid-20th century. The architect was C.A. Busby. The construction is stucco over a brick and rubble core, with bitumen-covered hipped slate roofs and boarded, overhanging eaves. The villas are double-fronted, with a 1:3:3:1 bay arrangement. They feature double bow fronts, and entrances are located within the outer bays. There are flat string courses and rusticated ground floors. Most windows are sash windows without glazing bars, except for one window in number 23. Continuous canopy hoods cover the first-floor fixed light windows, supported by cast-iron brackets; a cast-iron balcony is present on number 23, and has been renewed on number 21. Flat-roofed, pilaster porches, featuring a bottle balustrade (missing from number 21), are accessed by flights of steps and have rectangular fanlights and 20th-century doors. Number 21 has a long return that includes 21A, which abuts numbers 7-9 Lansdowne Square. This section is 4 bays wide, with two canted bays at second-floor level to the left, and includes double garage doors and a half-glazed 20th-century door for number 21A.
