Description
Nos. 86 and 87 on Western Road in Hove is a shop with storage above, built around 1886-1887. The facade was redesigned around 1910 and has been altered in the late 20th century. The building features a rendered exterior over brick and has a roof that is concealed behind a parapet. It is part of a terrace, located next to No. 85 to the west and Nos. 88, 89, and 90 to the east on the ground floor, with the upper floors adjacent to the south return of No. 59 Lansdowne Place.
The structure has three storeys and four bays, characterized by pilaster quoins, a dentil-moulded cornice, and a fluted string course. The square window openings have rounded corners and are set in moulded surrounds, with cills supported by brackets, mostly featuring cast-iron window box guards. The sash windows have one vertical glazing bar. Originally, Nos. 86 and 87 had slender columns with arch-head openings, but these have been altered to include inserted plate glass. The shop has an ornate fascia with glazing bars and slender columns supporting arch-head openings, which are now obscured. The door features a shaped head with an Art Nouveau-style fanlight above, made of clear glass. This building is part of a notable group of structures to the east.
