Description
This is a house, built between 1900 and 1903, and later altered in the late 20th century. Designed by architect A. Faulkner and built by William Willett, it is situated on a corner plot and is part of a notable group with numbers 8 and 10 Grand Avenue. The house is constructed of red brick with tile hanging to the first floor, and has a steeply pitched hipped clay tile roof with sprocketed eaves. A prominent external brick stack is positioned to the right of the entrance, with chimneys set at an angle, along with a further two groups of similarly tall stacks on the east return and to the north.
The west front, which serves as the entrance front, has two storeys plus an attic and is arranged with three bays. It features an irregular arrangement of mullion and transom windows. A central, full-height gabled bay projects, with eaves extending over canted bays that have rendered plinths. A 20th-century dormer window has been inserted into the right return. The left end has a shaped gable and a six-light window at the top, with a four-light window below; the right-hand window breaks into a large chimney breast. A hipped roof porch, supported by three sets of pillars, leads to an arched entrance containing an original panelled door and fanlight with an Adam-style internal grill. The south front (right return) features a full-height canted bay and an inserted 20th-century plate glass dormer window.
