Description
The Hove War Memorial features a Doric column made of grey granite, topped with a bronze statue of St George created by Sir George Frampton, Royal Academician. The column stands on a square, two-stage plinth, which is set on a shallow three-stage square base, making the total height of the memorial 10 meters.
Inscriptions on the upper stage of the plinth include the following: on the north side, "1914-19 1939-45 IN EVER GLORIOUS MEMORY OF HOVE CITIZENS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR AND WORLD WAR"; on the east side, "1939 TO 1945"; on the south side, "1914 TO 1919 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE"; and on the west side, "1939 TO 1945".
At each corner of the memorial, there are low stone bollards that are original to the structure. Next to each bollard, there is a modern metal lamp pillar, which is not considered to be of special interest.
