Description
Jireh Baptist Church is a Baptist chapel dated 1853, located on Boot Way in Burnley. The building is constructed of coursed rock-faced sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. It is a small rectangular structure positioned at right angles to the street and is a single storey high. The facade has two windows and is symmetrical, with a plinth and a pedimental gable. The central doorway is tall and has altered double doors, which are accessed by one step, along with a plain overlight and a plain surround that includes a moulded cornice supported by large fluted consoles. Above the doorway is a rectangular plaque inscribed with "JIREH ERECTED A.D. MDCCCLIII." The facade also features tall segmental-headed windows with eared architraves and altered glazing, and in the pediment, there is an octagonal stone plaque with radial openings that serves as a ventilator. On the left side of the building, there are two tall square-headed windows with altered glazing. The interior is not accessible but is reported to be just a shell. The church was built by the Strict and Particular Baptists, a sect that is unique to this area.
