Description

1 and 3 Nicholas Street are a pair of townhouses in a terraced row on the west side of the street, now used as offices. They were built around 1850 and have been altered since. The houses are constructed of watershot coursed sandstone and feature a slate roof. They have a double-depth plan, with No. 1 having its entrance front on the right-hand return to Red Lion Street, while No. 3 is asymmetrically double-fronted.

Both houses are three storeys high over cellars and have a total of four windows on the first floor and three on the second, all beneath a continuous moulded gutter cornice. No. 1, on the right, has two-light windows at the ground and first floors, featuring plain square-cut mullions. The original sash windows have been replaced with altered glazing. On the second floor, there is one small sash window without glazing bars, and all these windows have plain square-cut surrounds and raised sills.

No. 3, on the left, has a tall later 19th-century doorway that is offset to the right, with plain jambs, scrolled consoles, and a cornice, along with a 20th-century door that has a large overlight. To the left of the doorway, there is a two-light window similar to those of No. 1, and to the right, a single-light window. The first floor features three one-light windows, all with altered glazing, and on the second floor, there are two smaller widely spaced sash windows without glazing bars, with surrounds and sills similar to those of No. 1.

The interiors are understood to have been remodelled. These houses form a group with Nos. 5, 7, and 9 adjoining to the left and with Nos. 11 and 13A beyond, representing a good example of late Georgian town housing.
