Description
Nos. 11, 13, and 13A on Nicholas Street are four townhouses that form a terraced row on the west side of the street, with a return to Grimshaw Street at No. 8. These houses were likely built around 1849 and have been altered over time. They are constructed of coursed squared sandstone and feature a slate roof that is hipped at the corner to the left.
Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, except for No. 13, which appears to have been double-fronted. The buildings rise three storeys above cellars and have a window arrangement of 1+2+1+1. The doorways for Nos. 11 and 13 are located to the right and have been altered to include windows. The doorway for No. 13A is centrally located, with another doorway to the left. All doorways have plain jambs and lintels, as well as shallow moulded cornices. The cellar windows have been blocked with glass bricks, while the remaining windows have plain surrounds and altered glazing.
No. 8 on Grimshaw Street, which is the southern end of the terrace, features a single-window facade similar to the others but includes sill bands on the upper floors. It has a doorway to the left with pilaster jambs, a frieze, a cornice, and remnants of a pedimental blocking course, along with a recessed panelled door that is accessed by two steps, and an altered window at ground level that has been coupled.
The interiors of these buildings have not been inspected. They form a group with No. 8 Grimshaw Street and Nos. 5, 7, and 9 Nicholas Street, collectively representing a good example of late Georgian town housing.
