Description

The Burnley Building Society Offices, located at 19 Parker Lane, were constructed between 1927 and 1930 by the architectural firm Briggs and Thornley from Liverpool. This building, now serving as council offices, features a modernist classical style and is likely steel-framed with a cladding of sandstone ashlar, although the roof, which is concealed, is probably slate.

The structure has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys high over a basement. The east facade facing Parker Lane consists of a long arrangement of three main bays, flanked by five bays on the narrower south facade facing Grimshaw Street. The south facade is distinguished by a plinth, pilasters, a Greek key band, and a high panelled parapet. It showcases a giant colonnade of fluted columns with composite caps that include volutes and anthemions. The central doorway has been altered to a window but originally featured a raised enriched architrave beneath a dentilled cornice on consoles. The ground floor has tall 24-pane windows with projected aprons and metal-framed glazing that includes tilting casement openings at the tops, while the first floor has shorter 20-pane windows with similar glazing.

The east facade to Parker Lane has a wide central section styled similarly but with fluted pilasters instead of semi-columns and lacks a doorway. The outer bays contain doorways (with the left one altered to a window) that have moulded architraves and cornices on consoles. The parapet's centre is inscribed with "BURNLEY BUILDING SOCIETY." A later extension is present at the north end of the building. The interior has been altered. This building is included for its group value.
