Description

14 and 16 Nicholas Street are building society offices, now serving as Local Education Authority offices, built in 1927 by G & S Keighley for the Borough Building Society. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar, with the upper floors featuring punch-dressed surfaces, while the rear is constructed of Accrington brick and white glazed brick. The roof is not visible but is likely slate. The building has a one-and-a-half depth design, with front offices, a rear corridor, and a staircase. It stands three storeys high and features a 1:2:1 window arrangement, with the left portion infilled. The main section has a moulded plinth, sillbands on the upper floors, a modillioned cornice, and a parapet with pedimental cresting. Each floor has two pairs of coupled sashed windows; the ground floor windows are segmental-headed and flanked by polished granite colonnettes with a continuous cornice, while the upper floors have square-headed windows with roll-moulded surrounds. To the right, there is a narrow single-window bay that includes a segmental-headed doorway at ground level. The left side has an infilled portion made of coursed squared sandstone with irregular window openings. Inside, there is some original panelling, a staircase with geometrical balusters, and some stained glass. The building forms a group with Nos 18 and 20 to the right and No. 9 Grimshaw Street to the left, contributing to its group value.
