Poor Law Union offices, now council offices. 1866. By William Waddington & Son; altered. Rock-faced sandstone with freestone dressings and hipped slate roofs on 2 levels. Florentine style. Elongated rectangular plan in 3 parts with a central 2-storey hall flanked by offices. 2 storeys, 3:4:4 windows, the central element higher and the flanking ranges slightly set back; with a chamfered plinth, sillbands, string-courses between the floors and bracketed eaves cornices. The central portion has recessed segmental-headed 4-pane sashed windows at ground floor with foliated moulding to the heads, and tall round-headed windows at 1st floor with 2-centred arched extradoses, foliated intradoses and impost bands, and sashed glazing with round-arched glazing bars in the upper leaves and etched crowns on the glass. Immediately to the left the 3rd bay of the left-hand office range has a large round-headed doorway with panelled chamfered pilasters, foliated spandrels and a dentilled cornice; to the right, the other office range has a simpler doorway in the 2nd bay; otherwise, both flanking ranges have 4-pane sashed windows, those at ground floor square-headed and those above segmental-headed. Ridge chimneys flanking the centre and gable chimneys at both ends. INTERIOR not inspected. Forms group with Nos 22 & 24 adjoining to the right (qv).
