Description

Endsleigh Insurance Imperial Chambers is a bank building, now used as offices, constructed in 1894 by William Waddington for the Union Bank. The building is designed in the Jacobean style and features sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. It has a rectangular plan on a corner site, with a splayed corner facing Grimshaw Street.

The structure has three storeys plus a basement and attic, with three windows on the Manchester Road facade and a two-window corner. Notable architectural details include sillbands, a strapwork frieze, and a dentilled cornice at the ground floor, along with panelled friezes on the upper floors. The second floor is capped with a cornice, and the attic storey features enriched semicircular gablets over the windows, complete with ball finials and a more elaborate design over the corner.

The corner of the building includes a round-headed doorway flanked by panelled pilasters and a carved extrados featuring a monogrammed keystone ("UB"). The first floor has coupled windows with a colonnetted Jacobean-style architrave, which includes carved triangular cresting and ball finials. The second floor features a tripartite window, and there is a pilastered shaped gable with a central window. The Manchester Road facade has three recessed windows at the ground and first floors set behind colonnades, with arched openings at the ground floor. The Grimshaw Street facade mirrors this design with three sets of three windows, separated by two additional windows in a matching style. All windows have 20th-century glazing. The interior has not been inspected.
