Description

Moothall Chambers is a building from 1884, designed by Isitt and Verity, located on Wallgate in Wigan. It originally housed three shops with offices above and is now occupied by a Building Society. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and features an irregular trapeziform plan on a sharply-angled corner site, with a slight curve at the right-hand end. It is designed in the French Renaissance style.

The building stands three storeys tall and has a façade with a 1:5:1 window arrangement. The ground floor, which has been altered, features a 20th-century pilastered design with a continuous cornice. The end bays are highlighted by enriched pilasters on both upper floors, with an enriched frieze and a prominent modillioned eaves cornice. The central doorway is topped by a segmental pediment with carving and a shield, while the other bays have altered shop fronts.

On the first floor, the outer bays contain three-light segmental oriel windows with reeded bases and slender shafts to the mullions topped with crocket caps, plain friezes, and moulded cornices. The main range features square-headed windows with individual prominent cornices on brackets. The second floor has Venetian windows in the outer bays, complete with keystones and richly-carved spandrels, while the main range displays arcaded round-headed windows with carved imposts, keystones, and carved spandrels. All windows are sashed without glazing bars.

To the right, there is a four-window return in a simpler style. Moothall Chambers forms a group with the adjoining buildings at Nos. 12-20 and No. 22, contributing significantly to the character of the central area of Wigan. It is included for its group value.
