Description

The war memorial, located south of the Church of All Saints, was constructed in 1925 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. It is made of Portland stone and features bronze plaques, following the design of an Eleanor Cross. The memorial has an octagonal three-stage plinth, with the center and upper stages adorned with rectangular bronze plaques that list the names of the fallen in raised lettering. The upper stage has re-entrant sections on the south and north sides. The south side is inscribed with "REMEMBER THE MEN OF WIGAN WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES TO THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 / AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945", while the north side reads, "A GOOD LIFE HATH BUT A FEW DAYS / BUT A GOOD NAME LIVETH FOR EVER".

Above the plinth rises a high octagonal pillar with panelled sides and triangular shafts at the corners, supporting figures that bear wreaths between the windows of an intricately traceried lantern topped with a corona and apex cross. The memorial is set within a curved triangular garden, enclosed by dwarf walls with chamfered coping and dwarf quatrefoiled iron railings. The entrances at the corners are flanked by lamp standards on octagonal plinths. This memorial forms a group with the Church of All Saints.
