Description

This public house, located at No. 26 Wallgate in Wigan, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and has undergone alterations, with internal remodelling taking place as of June 1992. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth, double-fronted plan with a back extension and is designed in a Georgian style.

The exterior consists of three storeys and three windows, arranged symmetrically. It has a chamfered plinth, rusticated long-and-short quoins that are painted, a plain frieze, and a prominent eaves cornice with a blocking course. The ground floor features a large round-headed doorway with a stepped surround, supported by Tuscan columns, and includes a panelled door with a fanlight that has altered glazing. There are also large tripartite sashed windows with square-cut stone mullions.

On the first floor, there are similar tripartite windows above the ground floor windows, along with a 12-pane sash window in the centre. The second floor has similar 12-pane sashes. All windows have raised sills and wedge lintels. The side walls contain sashed windows with glazing bars, and the left side has a doorway near the front with a plate-glass panel engraved "DOG AND PARTRIDGE HOTEL." The right-hand rear corner features quoins and an eaves cornice, while the rear wing is made of handmade brick. A modern extension at the rear is not of special interest. The interior has been altered.

This building forms a group with the Church of All Saints, No. 22 to the right of the churchyard entrance, and No. 28, the Head Post Office, to the left.
