Description
17 and 18 Market Place are two houses that have been converted into building society offices. They were built around 1820 and have undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. The exterior is made of painted ashlar stone with ashlar dressings, and the roof is not visible. There is a single brick stack on the side wall. The building features string courses, a sill band, and a low coped parapet. It has three storeys and a total of twelve windows arranged in a 4 x 3 pattern. The front facing Market Place has four 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor and four 9-pane sash windows above. The right side, which faces Stockwell Gate, has similar window arrangements with three windows. The ground floor includes a full-width late 20th-century shop front on both sides, supported by granite piers and topped with a wooden fascia. There is a recessed corner entrance with a glazed double door.
