Description

No. 9 Stockwell Gate is a former public house, now serving as a building society office. It was built in 1888 and underwent restoration and remodeling around 1990. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a slate roof, showcasing a Jacobean Revival style.

Notable architectural elements include a plinth, angle pilasters, and cornices on each floor, along with a coped parapet that has a moulded and shouldered central gable. The central feature is a round cornered oriel window supported by a fluted bracket and a frieze adorned with swags, topped by a pedimented gable that is dated 1888.

The central plain sash window has a round-headed top light and is flanked by single curved sashes. On either side of the building, there are tripartite plain sashes with panelled pilasters, each topped with double swags and shaped aprons below. The angle pilasters are fluted.

On the ground floor, there is a central round-cornered moulded doorway with panelled pilasters, an enriched keystone, and floral spandrels. This doorway features a 20th-century metal-framed glazed door and overlight, with late 20th-century shop windows on either side. The building is included for its group value.
