Description
No. 96 Fishergate is a commercial building, likely originally a bank, now serving as a building society office. It probably dates from the mid to late 19th century and has been altered over time. The structure is built of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. It has a narrow rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street and is designed in a classical style.
The building has three diminishing storeys and four bays, with a plinth and cornices on all floors, the top cornice adorned with pairs of small acroteria. The ground floor features a tall four-bay arcade supported by coupled pilasters that have palmette capitals. The frieze and cornice are stepped around the openings, which include a doorway to the left and three altered windows. The first floor has sash windows without glazing bars, set in shouldered architraves topped with shallow dentilled pediments. The second floor features round-headed windows situated between coupled pilasters with stiff-leaf capitals. The rear and interior of the building were not inspected.
