Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland is a bank building located on Fishergate, dating from the late 19th century. It features ashlar stonework on a granite plinth and has a hipped slate roof behind a parapet. The building occupies a corner site, also facing Lune Street, and is designed in a Mannerist style.

It is two storeys high with a five-window front range on the first floor, including the corner. The corner and the centre left and right sections have canted sashed bay windows, with a sash window in the centre. The windows are adorned with moulded architraves topped with pediments and have blind balustrading beneath their sills. There is an additional sash window on the far right, which features a carved swag and cartouche above it.

On the ground floor, the building has moulded round-arched openings, each with keystones and brackets, and there is a moulded impost band with channelled rustication below. The corner entrance is flanked by granite columns, and there is another doorway on the far right with a moulded architrave and keystone. The granite plinth is complemented by a moulded cornice between the floors and a full entablature above the first floor, which is topped with a balustrade. The Lune Street side has a similar façade with pedimented sashes on the first floor. There is a late 20th-century extension to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
