Description
The National Westminster Bank is a bank building constructed in the 1860s to 1870s. It features granite ashlar with channelled rustication on the ground floor, while the upper floors are finished in stucco with rusticated quoins and moulded strings. The roof is made of dry Delabole slate and has modillioned eaves, including an octagonal roof with a finial on the right side, along with one axial brick stack and a cast-iron ogee gutter.
The building is designed on a round-fronted corner site plan, with an octagonal-plan tower on the right. It stands three storeys tall, with a polygonal four-storey tower to the right. The façade has a four-window range, plus a window in each external bay of the tower. The top tower features casement windows between angle pilasters, while the main range has horned sash windows. The second floor of the main range and the tower windows are set within architraves and pilasters, with consoles and an entablature featuring nowy-headed hoods above the first floor.
On the ground floor, there is an original round-arched doorway on the left, followed by two sashes on the right, and a wide 20th-century double-transomed shop front with a side doorway on the left and another doorway to the second bay of the tower, topped by a full-width stepped fascia. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest. This building is part of a notable group from this period in Windsor Place, all exhibiting a robust classical style, and it significantly contributes to the streetscape, particularly along The Parade.
