Description

The premises of John-Anne The Florist and Rapson's Butchers is a town house with shops, built around the 1870s. The ground floor on the right features rusticated stucco, while the rest of the building is finished in pebbledash on stucco with moulded stucco strings. It has a dry Delabole slate hipped roof with projecting eaves above a moulded and modillioned cornice, and cast-iron ogee gutters. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a three-window range, plus one window on the splayed return to the left. The original horned sash windows have segmental-arched openings on the first floor, framed by pilasters and an entablature with paired consoles supporting moulded cornices. The second-floor windows are framed by pilasters only.

On the left side, the shop front features a two-light design with two-pane horned sashes, a central fluted pilaster, and perforated vents above. The doorway to the splayed corner has an original glazed door with 'Rapson' engraved on the glass and an overlight. The moulded entablature above has paired end consoles and nowy-headed crests. The central round-arched doorway includes an original six-panel door and a plain fanlight, with a tripartite window on the right. The rear of the building has a stepped stair window with coloured leaded glass. Inside, the right-hand room, hall, and vestibule have moulded ceiling cornices, and there is an open-well stair with turned balusters and original glazed tiles in the corner shop. This building is part of a notable group of structures from this period in Windsor Place, all designed in a robust classical style.
