Description
The premises of L Couch is a mid-19th century town house with a shop, located on Barn Street in Liskeard. The building features incised stucco on masonry above a plinth and has a rag slate roof with projecting eaves over a moulded cornice. It includes a central roof dormer with slate-hung cheeks and a pair of 6-pane sash windows, with slate hanging on the left-hand gable. There are brick end stacks and a cast-iron ogee gutter. The building has a double-depth plan with a service wing at the rear left and stands two storeys plus an attic, with a three-window range. The segmental arches above the original 12-pane sash windows and the central 4-panel door with a 2-pane overlight are notable features. The original 4-light shop front includes a sidelight to the left of the original glazed doorway, with end pilasters and a moulded entablature featuring a fascia. The interior of the shop retains original counters and shelves, although the rest of the interior was not inspected. A high rubble wall adjoins the house on the right side of the rear garden. This building is unusually complete, including its shop interior.
