Description

A pair of semi-detached houses, numbers 1 and 8 Windsor Place, built around the 1870s. Number 8 is now a dental surgery. The houses are constructed with stucco fronts over granite ashlar plinths, with rubble walls elsewhere. They have hipped roofs covered in Delabole slate, with projecting eaves supported by moulded wooden brackets. The roofs feature axial and end brick stacks. The houses follow a double-depth plan and have an overall 6-window range. Each house has a symmetrical 3-window front. They originally had 4-pane hornless sash windows with segmental arches above, and a central round-arched doorway with a panelled door and a plain fanlight, set within a pilastered doorcase topped with a moulded hood supported on brackets. The ground floor is rusticated and features jambs, voussoirs and quoins with a vermiculated finish. A mid-floor string and a 1st-floor sill string are present, with moulded sills over brackets flanking balustraded aprons and moulded architraves above. Internally, the houses retain much of their original architectural detail, including moulded ceiling cornices in the front rooms. They are a good example of the robust classical style found in many buildings within Windsor Place.
