6, Baytree Hill

Two town houses with shops, built in the 1880s. The houses are constructed with stuccoed fronts on a masonry base, with rubble to the sides, and have dry slate roofs with deep eaves and moulded brackets. They were originally designed with double-depth plans. The house on the right is two storeys plus an attic, which has a 20th-century roof dormer. The other house is three storeys high. The front has an overall four-window range, stepping down to the right. A 20th-century double shop front occupies the left-hand side. Above the shop front, the upper parts of the houses are unaltered and feature quoin rustication, pilasters with consoles, and four-pane horned sash windows. Hoods are broken forward from moulded strings over the ground-floor windows, and a moulded sill string juts forward over brackets to the second-floor windows. The right-hand house retains a fine, original shop front featuring two entrances flanked by large, bowed lights and a central, flat light, all elliptically-headed over transoms and with slender mullions separating the lights. Double doors with overlights are fitted, and the sloping fascia incorporates blinds that form a cornice when closed. The first floor has a single-light horned sash window on the left and a tripartite sash window on the right, with pilasters supporting consoles to moulded hoods bearing scrolled crests over triglyph friezes. The interior was not inspected. The original shop front of No.6 makes a significant contribution to the architectural interest of the buildings.
