Description
47 and 48 Church Street are two town houses that have been adapted for shops. They date from the 18th century and were remodeled in the early to mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco on rubble with quoin strips, and the rear features slate hanging facing the harbour. The front roof is steep and covered with asbestos slate, while the rear roof has scantle slate on No. 48, which also has at least one 17th or 18th-century crested clay ridge tile. There are brick end stacks and a rear lateral stack on the right. The buildings have a double-depth plan with an irregular arrangement of later extensions at the back.
They rise three storeys and have a window arrangement of three on the left and two on the right. The second floor features early to mid-19th-century 12-pane sash windows, while below are later horned sashes. Architectural details include quoin strips, a scribed pilaster near the center, a lintel string, shaped aprons under the second-floor sills, and an eaves cornice with modillions beneath a deep soffit. The ground floor has a round-arched passage doorway with Tuscan half-columns, next to which is a mid to late 19th-century shop front with Ionic pilasters, four round-arched heads over two surviving lights, and a two-tier moulded entablature with consoles on the upper section. There is a 20th-century shop front on the right. At the rear, there is a rare c1800 three-light bowed window on the first floor, and many sash windows with glazing bars can be found at the back. The interior has not been inspected.
