Description
49 and 50 Church Street are two town houses with later shops, dating from the early 19th century, or possibly remodelled from the 18th century in the early 19th century. They are constructed of stucco on rubble, featuring keyblocks and a moulded parapet cornice that breaks forward over plain end pilasters. The front roof is covered with asbestos slate, while the rear roof has grouted scantle slate and includes one old raking dormer. There is a brick end stack on the right side. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high, with a five-window range. The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes. The ground-floor left side (No. 50) features an unusual deep-projecting late 19th-century shop front with quadrant corners and a canopy over the fascia. The other shop front, also deep, is likely a 20th-century remodelling of an older design. A central doorway has a two-panel fanlight above a 20th-century door. The rear of the building has one original sash window and one later horned sash window. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
