Description
42, 42A, 42B, and 43 Church Street is a town house with later shops, dating from the early 19th century, with a late 18th-century rear wing (42A). The building features stucco on rubble, part scantle slate roofing, including a hipped roof on the rear wing, and some areas covered with asbestos slate. It has brick end stacks and cast-iron ogee gutters. The structure has a double-depth plan with a wing at right angles behind No. 42. It stands three storeys high and has a three-window range, with the central window being blind. No. 42 retains original hornless sashes, featuring a square 9-pane sash above a tall 12-pane sash, while No. 43 has a later horned copy on the first floor and a 20th-century window above. The ground floor includes a central doorway with panelled reveals and an original panelled door. No. 42 displays late 19th-century end pilasters and consoles from a late 19th-century shop, while the other shop fronts are from the 20th century. At the rear, there are two hipped dormers. Inside, the rear wing is said to have an 18th-century doorcase and plank and muntin partitions.
