Description
No. 19 Church Street is a shop premises built in 1908, featuring lavishly detailed painted terracotta and render on what is likely brick, topped with an original scantle slate roof. Designed in a Mannerist Classical style, the building stands three storeys tall and has three bays on the second floor, each with 1:3:1 lights that include glazing bars. The façade is enhanced by paired pilasters with an entablature that flanks a wide Venetian window, which has a moulded hood on the first floor beneath a moulded mid-floor cornice.
The end pilasters on the second floor are connected to a moulded parapet cornice, which is topped with a shaped parapet featuring a coping cornice. The centre of the parapet rises higher, forming an open pediment framed by short end pilasters, which enclose a Baroque-style carved tympanum that includes a date panel. Additional decorative elements include moulded sills, eared architraves, console keyblocks, and a mid-window band. The first-floor window features a central three-light transomed mullion with glazing bars above the transom, and there are carved panels on the flanking pilasters. The shop front consists of large plate-glass windows and a deep splayed doorway on the left, which has a spoked fanlight above it and a panelled soffit over the entrance. The interior has not been inspected. This building is noted for its striking composition and is included for its group value with nearby structures.
