Description
The Former Freemasons' Hall is a building located on Church Street in Falmouth. It was constructed in 1885 as a Freemasons' Hall at a cost of £1,300, and a Savings Bank was added in 1887 for £800. The building is made of granite ashlar and features a plinth, rusticated pilasters that frame the end bays, a mid-floor string course on the central bays, and a moulded cornice on a panelled parapet that steps up to the side bays. The roof is not visible. The structure has a very deep plan and is two storeys high, with a front that originally had a nearly symmetrical arrangement of one bay, two bays, and one bay. However, the window in the center right has been converted into a doorway in the 20th century. The building retains its original hornless sash windows and has an original doorway in the right-hand bay, complete with original cast-iron gates. The interior has not been inspected. This building is notable for being the oldest Freemasons' lodge in the county and holds a prominent position on the street.
