Description

No. 146 Walcot Street is a shop built in the late 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate roof with a forward-facing gable. It has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with a two-window front.

The exterior includes a parapet at the coped gable end, which has a virtual pediment, steps to the quoins, and a ball finial at the apex. There is a recessed panel in the tympanum that follows the shape of the gable and has a slightly returned cornice below at the gutter level on the left return. The first floor features two plate glass sash windows with run-out chamfered jambs.

The original shopfront is well-preserved and spans the facade. It includes a set-back half-glazed central door with a tall overlight, flanked by plate glass shop windows that have low moulded sills. The windows are adorned with ornamented motifs two-thirds of the way up turned colonnettes, which likely indicate the positions of former overlights. Small blocks in the centre of the lintels suggest that the windows may have originally had two panes on each side.

Pilasters on either side of the facade have plinths and blocks positioned one-third of the way up, with moulded string courses at the level of the former overlights. Composite capitals support acanthus consoles with scroll finials that flank the cornice and fascia, with the capital, console, and finial returning to the left. The left return has a two-window range, while the rear features a plain coped parapet to the gable and 20th-century windows and door. The interior has not been inspected.
