Description
The Probate Office, originally a savings bank and courthouse, was built in 1840 and altered in 1867. It is constructed of ashlar with ashlar dressings and features a hipped slate roof with two coped ashlar side wall stacks. The building has a rusticated plinth, string courses, and sill bands, along with a dentillated main cornice. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range of unusual wooden-framed cross casements, which have projecting surrounds and pediments.
A central portico, supported by Doric pilasters and topped with a cornice, covers a fielded eight-panel door with a margin-glazed overlight. On either side of the door, there are 12-pane sash windows with flanking pilasters and small cornices, set within recessed panels. The left side of the building features a pedimented cross casement, with a pair of 12-pane sashes below that are similar to those at the front.
At the rear, there is a lower set back range with dentillated eaves and two 12-pane sashes on each floor. Additionally, there are two hipped two-storey pavilions, with the left one containing a 12-pane sash. A central doorway with moulded round corners and a stencilled pattern, dated 1867, is also located at the rear.
