Description
The Swan Inn is a former farmhouse that was adapted early on into a public house with an attached shop. It dates from the late 18th century and consists of two builds that have been altered over time. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and features a composition tile roof that resembles stone slate. It has an irregular double-depth plan with rear wings and stands two storeys tall, with a total of three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, separated by a vertical joint.
The main range is symmetrical, featuring a small central doorway with chamfered jambs and a plain lintel. There are two 2-light flush-mullioned windows on each floor, with the ground floor mullions being chamfered and the upper ones square. A large ogival-headed painted signboard is located in the centre of the upper floor. To the left, there is an early addition that consists of a narrow bay with a doorway and a side window on the ground floor, and coupled windows above. All windows are sashed and do not have glazing bars. The building has gable chimneys on both sections.
At the rear, each portion has a wing, and the main range is now enclosed by 20th-century glazing. Inside, the space has been partitioned into various small rooms with stone flagged floors, and it is said to have prison cells at the rear. Historically, the Swan Inn was the meeting place of the Burnley Town Committee, which was formed in 1819 and was the first secular body for local government in the town during the 19th century.
