Description

This building is a terrace of three town houses located at 51, 53, and 55 The Terrace, dating from the late 17th century. The houses were refronted in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The exterior features incised stucco and render on masonry, with a steep dry slate roof that has seven gabled dormers, each with 12-pane, 2-light casements. Notably, No. 51 has a late 18th-century window with thick glazing bars. The houses have projecting front eaves, cast-iron ogee gutters, and rubble end stacks, along with three rubble rear lateral stacks and a similar rear gable stack on No. 55, which is on the right.

The layout is single-depth with rear wings at right angles, and the buildings stand two storeys plus attics, presenting a seven-window range. The nearly symmetrical front of No. 51 has three windows, while Nos. 53 and 55 feature late 19th or 20th-century four-pane horned sashes in narrow openings, except for a wide opening to the right of No. 55, which has tripartite sashes. The openings of No. 53 reveal ovolo-moulded oak lintels dating from around 1980. Each house has a late 18th-century pedimented pilastered doorway with panelled reveals for Nos. 53 and 55, all featuring six-panel doors. The rear elevation, which includes two hipped and two gabled wings, is irregular but visually interesting. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
